Spotify Live vs Clubhouse

Spotify Live vs Clubhouse

They have subtle differences in culture, technical capabilities, and usage. At the time this was written, Spotify Live was called Greenroom.

Clubhouse has moderators, while Greenroom has hosts. Room limits on CH are capped at 8k, while GR allows 1k. Everyone in the room can be on stage and everyone on stage can be modded on CH, but GR has only one host (no co-host) and a stage limit of 12.

Spotify, the owner of Greenroom, bought Betty Labs and Locker Room to convert it. They included a public chat, which CH answers with private backchannels.

On GR, the audience can chat with the speakers, and recording features are built in.

To succeed on either platform, you need to directly partner with the company’s hired producers. Promoted clubs on Clubhouse or featured shows on Greenroom are controlled manually, as is the verification checkmark.

You can link to anything in your GR bio, versus nothing in CH. Instead of linking Twitter and Instagram, it’s Twitter and YouTube, but you don’t need to verify ownership of the YouTube channel. This makes it easy for people to fake being someone else.

GR content is presented to you by topic, and you don’t have to follow anybody to see it. There are no private rooms nor clubs to build.

IPhone users can double tap speakers to give them a gem on Greenroom. Gems are meaningless, and they were taken away when Clubhouse users flocked.

It won’t be until next year that Spotify pours real money into its marketing, but Greenroom already have exclusive content from The Ringer, which includes a recent WWE partnership.Spotify’s The Ringer And WWE Team To Launch Audio NetworkSpotify’s The Ringer and WWE have teamed up to launch an audio network as part of a multi-year partnership. Expect to see some great sports content by next year featuring big names. Also the company is actively recruiting creators for its Creator fundSpotify Greenroom Creator FundGet rewarded for creating must-hear live audio on Spotify Greenroom.https://greenroomcreatorfund.byspotify.com

This is a response to the largely failed and forgotten Clubhouse Creator First incubator program.

Beyond that, Spotify is a much bigger company than Clubhouse. Recording is built in, and it’s easy to upload to Anchor for podcast distribution. This means the work Greenroom creators put in today will last forever, unlike Clubhouse, which is forever gone.

The possibilities are endless…
