Of course it’s still possible. I work with agencies that help people grow all the time, and there’s always another voice welcome in another niche on social media.
It isn’t easy to scale an online presence on any platform, but it is definitely easier when you’re around for the early days.
Clubhouse and Spotify Greenroom are the latest social platforms people are building up their presence on. These audio platforms are already long past their heydays, and you won’t get a 6-figure or 7-figure following on there anymore now that the buzz is dead.
But people are still growing their presence on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Twitch, Facebook, Tiktok, and even Snapchat. Even Quora is a place you can grow your social presence.
The biggest problem you’ll find is discoverability on all of these platforms sucks. YouTube is one of the only social platforms that has decent off platform discoverability.
It’s extremely difficult to get noticed on other social platforms, because they’re not indexed very well in search engines. Have you ever tried searching Instagram or Twitch?
None of it is indexed in Google, and that severely limits the potential traffic to your page. That’s what makes it so hard to find anything.
Sure, hashtags help, but only barely. And even then, you’re going to get buried in the pile of similar posts. That makes it feel impossible to grow and succeed, but it’s not.
The trick is to focus on the entire internet, not just the one profile on the one social platform. You need to be discovered online, and that’s a more complicated strategy than just posting a photo or typing your thoughts on a status online.
You need a plan, and you need a team. You have to brand yourself and stick to it. And you’re going to work for months or even a year before you see any real progress.
But it’s absolutely possible to build a five- or six-figure following on any social platform today. That’s all it takes to be an influencer and unlock brand partnerships and other payments.
Just know that it doesn’t pay as much as you’d think. The only way you’ll be satisfied with this career path is if you truly love what you do.
Otherwise you’ll quickly find yourself working harder than you ever did in your life for not that much benefit.
Being an influencer is not as easy as it looks. People work hard and their mental health often suffers from it. Be careful what you wish for.
